This article gives an overview of the evolution of Interpreting Studies and compares the development of the discipline in German-speaking countries and in Italy. After a brief discussion of how the discipline came into being and what its actual academic position is, interpreting research fields are outlined: From the psychological and cognitive studies on simultaneous interpreting to studies on different forms of public service interpreting. Until the beginning of the century the discipline has evolved in a similar way in Italy and in German-speaking countries, but then, new lines of research emerged. In Italy corpus-based research has gained momentum, while historical studies have made great advances in Germany and Austria.
