AN ASSESSMENT OF STAKEHOLDERS’ COMPLIANCE TO THE WASTE MANAGEMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENTS GUIDELINES IN BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA

The main purpose of this study is to assess the level of stakeholders’ compliance to the waste management of electrical and electronic guidelines in Bauchi Metropolis and its environs. It comprised of identifying the procedures for handling e-waste and the level of compliance of various stakeholders to the existing e-waste guidelines in Nigeria. Systematic sampling technique was employed to identify the respondents in the study area. The data for this study were collected through site visit and field study questionnaires. A total of 200 valid responses were collected from the survey questionnaire. The responses generated from the survey questionnaire was analysed using excel software to compute descriptive statistics method. The findings of this study demonstrated that level of compliance was close to be the best among the manufacturers, whereas, 80% meet the requirement of standard organization of Nigeria (SON). In addition, 90% of importers do not dispose of e-waste in an environmentally sound manner. Similarly, 93.61% of household neither knew what are e-waste and its hazardous nature. Results revealed that compliance was moderate among the importers, re-users and disposal, except for retailers, recyclers, dismantlers which shows low compliance to waste electrical electronic guidelines limits. It is likely that the demand for electrical and electronic equipment’s and ultimately, the quantity of e-wastes generated will continue to increase as the city continues to grow, which means National Environment Standard and Enforcement Agency (NESREA) should thus recognize e-waste management as a priority and work to prevent further environmental degradation by adopting effective policy.
