This poster shows results from the 2023 Workplace Equity (WE) survey, conducted by the Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC), with comparisons to 2018 results. The years between the two surveys witnessed monumental cultural and professional shifts especially from the COVID-19 pandemic, high-profile, racially-motivated murders in the US, and divisive politics worldwide. Events during these years triggered public commitments from organizations to root out systemic racism and discrimination. Did these good intentions take shape in the scholarly communications industry? Did real change, as measured through workplace experiences and perceptions, result from the pandemic’s workplace disruptions and public reckoning on social justice? The 2023 survey received 1,755 responses across 6 continents. Respondents were predominately from North America (61%) and Europe (26%) and a geographical spread similar to 2018 results. Respondents were 72% women, 21% men, and 4% non-binary. 22% of the respondents identified as LGBTQ+ compared to 12% in 2018. 23% identified as disabled, neurodivergent, or both compared to 11% in 2018. In addition to showing demographics of respondents, this poster will highlight key areas of professional and personal experiences of scholarly publishing professionals including employee satisfaction, employer commitment to diversity, barriers to career progression, mentorship, networking, and more.
