Artificial intelligence (AI) is making a significant stride in scholarly communication; however, cases of ethical violations and concerns continue to impede its efficient integration and use. The fragmented landscape of AI policies in scholarly workflows driven by researchers, institutions, publishers, etc. highlights the need for a cohesive approach toward upholding research integrity while embracing AI. To understand the current status of research integrity and chart a course for the future based on researcher attitude and level of preparedness, we conducted a global cross-sectional survey and analyzed responses from 693 respondents from 210+ universities and 60+ countries. We investigated the prevalence of AI’s perceived impact on academic rigor, researcher awareness about current guidelines, and institutional measures to prevent ethical violations.
This poster session aims to highlight the stakeholder concerns surrounding research integrity with AI integration and propose solutions to mitigate these challenges. We aim to probe the argument surrounding responsible AI augmentation (as opposed to just integration) and lay a foundation for its role in maintaining research integrity through hybrid intelligence. We will also discuss the necessity of a universal guideline for AI in research and academic workflows. Additionally, we will discuss the role that editors, publishers, authors, universities, policymakers, etc. should play in ensuring a future that is equitable, upskilled, transparent, and accountable, as well as upholds research integrity.
By presenting our study findings, we aim to contribute to the constructive dialogue imperative for addressing tensions, dispelling hype, and charting an evidence-based path for AI augmentation in research and academia.
