Background: Majority of people experience lower back pain at any point of life which lasts for longer period. Physiotherapists employ different therapeutic options to treat chronic non-specific low back pain.
Aims and Objectives: To determine the effect of conventional physical therapy with or without diaphragm manual therapy in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain.
Material and Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in which patient was kept blind. A total of 34 male patients were selected from two clinical settings in Faisalabad.Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used. Patients were divided into two groups at random. Group A received conventional physical therapy as well as Diaphragm Manual Therapy, while Group B received conventional physical therapy as well as Sham Diaphragm Manual Therapy. Numerical Pain Rating Scale, lumbar range of motion, Oswestry Disability Index and the Short Form 12 Health Survey Questionnaire were evaluated before and after treatment.
Results: Statistical analysis was performed on SPSS V.25. Mean age in group A and group B was 40.58+9.26 and 41.58+8.55 respectively. Improvement was observed for NPRS, lumbar ROM, ODI and SF-12 in both groups (p<0.05). Significant improvement was observed in NPRS, lumbar ROM, ODI and SF-12 at post treatment readings (p<0.05) in Conventional Physical Therapy and Diaphragm Manual Therapy group.
Conclusion: Both groups were shown to be effective in improving NPRS, all lumbar ROMs, ODI and SF-12 scores. But, significant improvement was demonstrated in Conventional Physical Therapy and Diaphragm Manual Therapy for all dependent variables in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain.
