Academic Publishing in Psychiatry Section of Psychiatric Association of Turkiye: A novel model of a task force to improve knowledge of academic publishing and international equilibrium within the society

Psychiatry, which is one of the specialties of medicine that needs a rapid increase in scientific knowledge and is one of the most frequently updated clinical practices, has undoubtedly become one of the fields that are most interested in scientific publishing. Academic publishing has gained importance due to the requirements in scientific performance evaluations and academic promotions both in Turkiye and in the world. Accordingly, to share up-to-date information and constantly updated details about academic publishing in psychiatry within the society, ensure interaction and coordination among colleagues interested in academia, Academic Publishing in Psychiatry Section within the Psychiatric Association of Turkiye (PAT) has been established under the coordination of Dr Oguzhan Kilincel and Dr Yasin Hasan Balcioglu on November 21, 2022, upon the decision of the Executive Committee of PAT. The primary and initial missions of this section are to inform colleagues and encourage their participation in international meetings organized by EASE and other professional organizations and to organize interactive meetings and webinars in which information is shared from the perspectives of editors, reviewers, publishers and authors about academic publishing. The section is also expected to contribute to the academic publishing platforms of the Association if needed. The first meeting of the section, titled “The adventure of the scientific article from three perspectives: What does the editor want? What does the reviewer expect? What does the author do?”, was scheduled at the PAT Annual Meeting and Clinical Education Symposium in May 2023 which was postponed due to massive earthquakes occurred in Turkiye in February 2023. However, the section is planning to re-schedule this meeting at the 59th National Psychiatry Congress in October 2023. Academic Publishing in Psychiatry Section has 36 members as of May 2023 and currently actively communicates among members through WhatsApp and e-mail groups. As far as we know, the Section is the first among all medical specialty associations in Turkiye and we believe that it will inspire other associations.
