          Abstract

          El presente trabajo investiga el rendimiento del ferrocarril español de vía ancha mediante el estudio de una muestra de compañías ferroviarias durante el periodo 1910-1922, que en aquel momento representaba prácticamente el 97% del trazado de la red nacional. A partir de la aplicación de la metodología DEA se obtuvieron los niveles de eficiencia y cambio productivo junto con el análisis de las causas de su variación. Los resultados obtenidos permiten concluir que el incremento medio de la productividad durante el periodo analizado alcanzó el 1,6% anual, que juntamente con el distinto reparto de dicha variación en función de las diferentes regiones geográficas en las que prestaron sus servicios las compañías, podría explicar algunos de los movimientos corporativos que sucederían pocos años después.

          O presente trabalho investiga o rendimento da rede ferroviária espanhola de via larga mediante o estudo de uma amostra de companhias ferroviárias durante o período 1910-1922, que naquele momento representavam praticamente 97% do traçado da rede nacional. A partir da aplicação da metodologia DEA obtiveram-se os níveis de eficiência e mudança produtiva junto com a análise das causas de sua variação. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que o crescimento médio da produtividade durante o período analisado alcançou 1,6% anual, que juntamente com a distinta distribuição de tal variação em função das diferentes regiões geográficas nas que as companhias prestaram seus serviços, poderia explicar alguns do movimentos corporativos que ocorreriam poucos anos depois.

          Translated abstract

          This work looks at the performance of the broad gauge Spanish railroad sector by studying a sample of railroad companies during the period from 1910-1922, which at that time represented practically 97% of the national rail network. Using the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) methodology, the levels of efficiency and productive change were obtained along with an analysis of the reasons for their variation. The results lead to the conclusion that the average productivity increase during the period analyzed reached 1.6% per year, which, along with the different distribution of that change according to the diverse geographical regions in which the companies operated, could explain some of the corporate movements that occurred just a few years later.

          Ce travail analyse le rendement des Chemins de fer espagnols de voie ferrée large par l'étude d'un échantillon des compagnies ferroviaires durant la période 1910-1922, représentant pratiquement 97 % des voies du réseau national à cette époque. L'application de la méthodologie DEA (data envelopment analysis) a permis l'obtention de niveaux d'efficacité et de changement productif ainsi que l'analyse des causes de variation. Les résultats obtenus permettent de conclure que l'augmentation moyenne de la productivité durant la période analysée a atteint 1,6% annuel, ce qui, avec la distribution différente de cette variation en fonction des différentes régions géographiques dans lesquelles les compagnies ont prêté leurs services, pourrait expliquer certains mouvements corporatifs qui auraient lieu peu d'années après.
