          Abstract

          Translated abstract

The inquisitorial trials of pious women on the charges of being deluded and spellbound in the New Spain, during the XVIII century, show how the ""abnormality" of the mistic and ascetic model of spirituality to which women were so fond of in said century moved in to the realm of the medical discourse. The male look is bewildered by the continuity of the external signs of female sprirituality, their bodies are the means through which they account for something out the normalcy that identifies them: raptures, possessions, fits, shudders, and melancholy, among others. In the pious women, these phenomena puzzle the mind and are suspiciously considered in that they used to be poor and simple women -in the priests'view- that were of independent means and made of the religious life a way of living. This paper shows how the inquisitors adhere to the rationalistic logic of the century by institutionalizing the association among mistic phenomena, madness and hysteria in women. The female body, its oddness and disconfort that arouse in very community, allows in the western society and in the colonial scene to make the first legal uses of hysteria as a demerit of the word and actions of women in the great account of history.
