          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract This paper discusses the role of the bodily senses in the description of the knowledge of God in some writings of Saint Augustine. The doctrine of the spiritual or inner senses and the different kinds of vision according to the Bishop of Hippo is examined against the background of the Salvation History. All these doctrines favour a description of the knowledge of God which turns gradually away from the bodily senses. Nevertheless, some passages of Augustine resort to sense images in general and specifically to gustatory metaphors for narrating the experience of the divine. This leads to the conclusion that the doctrine of the inner senses as well as the resorting to sense metaphors (especially, to taste metaphoric) account for an experience of the divine whose foundation lies is the vagueness of the distinction between intern and extern, which integrates the bodily senses to redefine what is real.
