          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract: Violence is a problem in democratic societies, as it endangers fundamental human rights. In recent decades, Mexico has been characterized by a high incidence of direct, structural, and cultural violence. This article identifies the main factors that promote and inhibit the endorsement of violence among Mexican middle school students. Using hierarchical linear models, we analyze the data gathered by the 2016 International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) from a sample of more than five thousand students in the country. The results indicated that lower approval of the use of violence is associated with students participating in deliberative processes, high empathy, acceptance of diversity, and trust in civic institutions. Conversely, higher endorsement of violence was associated with disobedience to the law, approval of corruption, and involvement in illegal activities. The school, it is argued, has the role through its action of reducing violence via promoting inclusion, empathy, tolerance, and respect for rights.
